How about a general purpose "comment" field?
This could always be the last one, and it could be optionally empty.
Users could store in that field whatever they want (except newline
characters and ':'), but other than that the field would not
appear anywhere in VDR. It would just be read in and written out
if the actual channel settings are changed within VDR.
