They will have this competition anyway because you can output the AC3
and other streams through a normal sound card. The only problem here is
to syncronize everything properly. But this is also no problem with DVD
replay. So why should there be any problem with DVB?

I think the support for AC3-passthrough is missing here because nobody
thought 2 years ago that AC3 will ever be part of the DVB standard and a
station will really broadcast anything. I don't know what chip is used
in the Nokia 9800S settop box. But this box is also not capable of AC3
output and there it is a hardware limitation. Maybe we have the same
here on the DVB-S and no firmware will ever be able to set the necessary
flag.

And the reason for dropping all the standard tv signals on the DVB card
may be just costs. The DVB-S card is really expensive compared to fully
functional settop box. The new stripped down cards are much cheaper and
therefor attractiv for normal PC users. I assume that most PC users
don't connect the video/audio to there regular tv.
