My system load is about 50%, I've no problems with ac3.
I'm able to compile a new kernel during playing a recording with ac3 ;)

yes, it does not more than call ac3play in an endless loop. I've needed
it with ac3play-0.1.0, because if I made a pause, than ac3play
segfaulted and the dvdplayer too.

/dev/ac3audio was a pipe device where dvdplayer, or in your case, vdr
puts the ac3data.
