That sounds like a good idea to me.
I suppose it is fair to assume that the best point is in the 
middle of the interval that shows full signal strength.

For experiments, this may be a good idea.
For productive use, it is of course not, as an attenuator will
also harm the weaker channels, of which you want every little
bit of signal strength you can get.
