I've attached a patch which converts the dvb-bt8xx driver to the bttv sub_device interface, and thus makes it work with the converted frontend drivers. You need to update your bttv drivers to a snapshot, which you can download from http://dl.bytesex.org/cvs-snapshots/ (dated after 2004-07-22 15:54). I've also made it depend on the bttv.h from the kernel you are compiling the dvb modules against, so if you are compiling the video4linux and dvb modules outside the kernel source tree, you will need to copy bt848.h and bttv.h (overwrite any links with the same name) from the video4linux tree to the build-2.6 directory before compiling.

this looks good for me(tm)!

I took a:
* linux-2.6.8 kernel
* video4linux-20040730-152601.tar.gz
* dvb-kernel CVS snapshot from today (20040814)
* and your patch.

First it did not work, but I figured that I needed to update and
recompile the dvb-apps.
One problem remains: even after I compiled the current player (1.0pre5-3.3.3) against my new kernel "mplayer dbb://$CHANNEL" does
not work.
->mplayer dvb://ZDF
MPlayer 1.0pre5-3.3.3 (C) 2000-2004 MPlayer Team
[...]
Playing dvb://ZDF.
code taken from dvbstream for mplayer v0.4pre1 - (C) Dave Chapman 2001
Released under the GPL.
Latest version available from http://www.linuxstb.org/
dvb_tune Freq: 562000000

... and it is stuck here.
->./tzap -r ZDF -o - | mplayer -ao alsa -
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
tuning to 562000000 Hz
[...]

This works. Probably the mplayer code needs some updates due to the
recent changes. I will try to investigate.
According to the web site of dvbstream http://www.linuxstb.org the current release isn't working with the dvb-kernel CVS stuff. As mplayer uses dvbstream the reason for mal-functioning is clear.

NOTE: The following versions of dvbstream are not compatible with the latest DVB driver. Please download the latest CVS version of dvbstream from sourceforge.
