Jon,
Ive had the same problems with the latest v4l snapshot locking the
machine up, it does not matter whether I specify card=0x71 it still locks up, I just keep the v4l in the 2.6.10 kernel, that way when I modprobe bttv it

Ahhh. Going back to the kernel bttv fixed that. Thanks for the tip. I can
even modprobe bttv without the card and i2c_hardware arguments.

I'm also getting a frontend device recognised now, and udev is creating the
appropriate nodes, so it's all looking good.

It does not matter whether you have Windows, Linux or Solaris. Signal
strength is independent of OS. What you see under Windows is a gimmick,
ie, if there is a channel lock, show display bar > 80%. that's all in
the strength inicator, even though under Linux, we don't have a
graduated scale, to show the actual strength. Nothing to get upset.

Manu, sorry, that was just a bit of frustration showing through ;-)
That's okay, even sometimes i also think i would snap the card into 2
pieces.

My comment regarding signal strength was more anecdotal: under Windows, I
can watch three of five channels without any artefacts. There are two
channels that it just won't tune. Under Linux, if I run dvbscan, it only
picks up two of the five channels.
Zig-Zag scan causing problems ?

I appreciate that signal strength won't change. The card's in a different
PC, with a different OS, and different drivers, so I guess there are a
number of variables there.
No, the drivers have got nothing to do with that except for the external
tuning app. (szap in this case, i think the zig-zag scan requires a
larger signal strength..)

Even if you compare the Windows app/driver code, it is moreor less
similar except for the Windows interface part..

You have a VCR kind of application there. That's the only difference i
have seen, even on a line to line basis..

Manu
