you could add a dummy tray open/close (eject /dev/scd0;eject -t /dev/scd0)
into preview.sh, perhaps this will trigger the m.d. plugin to re-read 
/dev/dvd, but thats just a guess.

well, how could it ? There is no activity on any (external) media, you just 
modify some file, monitoring that would either allways use cpu time, or need 
a kernel module and re-written double code in the plugin.
