not exactly! Linux is of course able to handle files larger than 2GB but not on FAT partitions! Files >2GB also _are_ seen with ls (if you don't have a very old version of ls).

The real reason is, that the files a indexed with integer offsets which only have a range to address byte offsets up to 2GB.
