[vdr] Re: dvb-shop "blackbox" WAS Re: Re: J2 pins to RGBS

I too have read some complaints about the quality of the blackbox setup. Maybe it is not the box itself, but the ribbon cable that is the weakest link.

Anyway, what I originally wanted was a VGA-RGB signal for my plasma, not a SCART-RGB signal.

However, I would be happy with a high quality SCART-RGB signal, and then I could purchase a sync-separator that will transform SCART-RGB to VGA-RGB (RGBHV).

I wonder in blackbox that it has so many cables and connectors according to picture in lower left. Every connector is potential ghosting source (signal reflection at the end of line).

And it reveals again the basic problem (IMHO) of these cable designs. The cable from J2 to backplate connector is unshielded flat cable, and worst problem is that SPDIF signal (digital 1 and 0's at high rate) are next to color signals. Blue is at pin 3, SPDIF at pin 4, green at pin 5. This is caused by J2 connector itself and causes with flat cable those signals to run side-by-side.

This causes distrortion grid of about 45 degrees in video picture. Only solution is to separate SPDIF-signal from cable. Better would be shielded video signal lines.

SPDIF (direction giving, not absolute calc because framing etc):
48000Hz * 2 channels * 16-bits per channel = 1.5MHz digital signal

And basicly digital signals in state transition (0 to 1 or 1 to 0) has all frequencies at signal. This you can also hear with GSM phone and loudspeaker. And spdif-signal will crossfeed to your video signals causing distortions.

Best regards, Jori
