Fair enough. But how vanilla is vanilla? Completely unchanged? How 
about non functionality related changes simply for making it fit in a 
distribution (such as Debian)? I guess that would only include how and 
where files are arranged and nothing in the core of VDR.

I ask because if superficial changes like that were still OK I'd 
consider having 2 versions of VDR installed. A tweaked version and an 
almost vanilla version for the purpose of verifying whether the problem 
was with VDR or some of the modifications.
