I fail to see any logic behind this statement. "Little network devices"
like the 100$ gigabit switches have a much higher switching bandwidth
than a highend _server_ PC. Custom-designed devices do have an advantage
over general purpose devices in their designed application...

Yeah I too have 3 cards in a PC, two "budget" and one "full featured".
But I wouldn't call that rock solid, the ARM crashes every couple of
hours, the TI DSP is completely intolerant to received bit errors, and
the price for "no thermal problems" is a noise level that's only
slightly lower than the FA18 fighter planes in T/O power setting on the
nearby airforce base.
