[vdr] skincurses doesn't work

Hello,

How can I use the skincurses plugin? The plugin compiles fine but I get no OSD 
drawn to the console (neither over a ssh connection nor directly on the 
console of my vdr server).
Do I have to activate this plugin somehow?  
My setup is a epia-m w/ ff-dvb-s card. no tv connected. freshly installed 
gentoo linux (but with ncurses installed). latest VDR (1.3.33) and 
kernel-2.6.12-r10
