[vdr] vdr dies if illegal timer found

That should never happen. I think you use a obsolete or a wrong
version ...

1st) vdr 1.3.44+ use description field never more
2nd) xxv 0.60 and prior use the correct "|" to replace LF
3rd) current svn release of xxv is ready to use a up to date release
from vdr
