A Home Theater Platform is a software (solution) that makes a personal video recorder or digital video recorder (PVR, DVR) out of a (suitably powerful) PC. They provide TV watching, recording of films and organising capability, and often many more features (EPG, music player, image viewer etc).

MythTV, Freevo and VDR are open source and GPL-licensed DVR applications for Linux. The KnoppMyth Linux distribution provides an out of the box MythTV based PVR solution.
