revell | hi. is there a script to extract the fw from terratec windows drivers? i'm trying to add a H6 MKII to em28xx and did not find sth. suitable on the wiki page "Development: How to extract a firmware" | [18:22] |
......... (idle for 43mn)
Ormu | revell: is it (in this case or in general) stored in a separate file, or inside the main driver file (.sys, usually)?
in the first case, extract the driver installer using 7zip or something... | [19:05] |
in the second case... meh, if there's no script available, perhaps try with a disassembler and/or kernel debugger
just my 2 cents :P | [19:10]
revell | Ormu: i extraced the drv exe and this gave me some .sys files, so i guess the fw is inside the one of them. there is a .rom file as well, but its size is too small compared to the H5 fw file | [19:15] |
Ormu | .rom sounds like a firmware file... what sizes are those (that and the H5 fw)? | [19:16] |
revell | so i will have to use some USB snooper i guess? and can the device get permanently damaged when experimenting with a wrong fw file? | [19:16] |
Ormu | I don't know how likely it is, but I guess it is possible to create permanent damage too... | [19:19] |
revell | dvb-usb-terratec-h5-drxk.fw is 50222B, dvb-usb-terratec-h7-drxk.fw is 7770B and merlinFW.rom is 16382B. it seems that they got smaller in size, so maybe merlinFW.rom is what i need. but can the devide get damaged if this is the wrong file?
damn - i'm not going to try this then ;) | [19:20] |
Ormu | i guess the size is very chipset-dependent
hm so the file is called "merlinFW.rom" in the driver installer? if so, then i'm 95% sure that it's the right firmware | [19:24] |
revell | > Does the em28xx driver load a firmware?
No firmware is involved at all for this device. The Merlin ROM you are seeing is for other devices that use the same underlying driver. | [19:28] |
Ormu | lol | [19:28] |
revell | revell@rvllap:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/TerraTec/DriverInstall/TERRATEC_H5$ md5sum merlinFW.rom
647d818c6fc82f385ebfbbd4fb2def6d merlinFW.rom revell@rvllap:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/TerraTec/DriverInstall/TERRATEC_H5$ md5sum /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-terratec-h5-drxk.fw 19000dada8e2741162ccc50cc91fa7f1 /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-terratec-h5-drxk.fw | [19:29] |
Ormu | ah, alright | [19:34] |
revell | bummer... | [19:38] |
Ormu | btw, the merlin file is used with some other drivers too... http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=919552&p=3&#r51
as well as there -> http://linux-media.vger.kernel.narkive.com/8KrQF9y9/patch-cx25840-6-5mhz-carrier-detection-fixes#post3 | [19:44] |
revell | yes, this seems to be a common thing win drivers. but if this may brick the stick, i'm not going to try it out... ;) | [19:50] |
