[05:35] <fargoth> hey guys. Ive got an issue with my tuner when I run a scan. It's a Hauppauge HVR-2255 running on a 4.2 kernel.
[05:36] <fargoth> when I run scan on it scan reports "ERROR: cannot parse" for every line of the channel list
[05:37] <fargoth> i think its tunner issue because w_scan and mythtv timeout on every channel when scanning
[05:37] <fargoth> and mythbackend reports the device busy when there should be no other program using the device
[05:37] <fargoth> any thoughts?

[19:35] <markfoodyburton> I'm using the SAA716x Budget driver, but after about 10 minutes of 'normal' use, there the card seems to be functioning correctly, my machine simply freezes. Nothing in the logs, not hint to why - I have to BRB. It seems to be relatively repeatable. Is there any way of debugging? or has anybody seen anything like this before?
[20:23] <intracube> I'm trying to use dvbv5-scan with an initial scan file: /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/Astra-28.2E
[20:23] <intracube> but get the error: ERROR key/value without a channel group while parsing line 6 of /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/Astra-28.2E
[20:24] <intracube> I can see in some help pages it expects the DVBV5 format...
[20:24] <intracube> but I can't find a detailed description of this format
[20:24] <intracube> only snippets
[20:24] <intracube> but this page seems to say it supports the old format as well: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Frequency_scan#Comparison_of_DVB_frequency_scanning_commandline_utilities
[20:25] <intracube> but I can't get it to work. halp
[20:26] <markfoodyburton> I had the same problem - didn't resolve it :-( (I used tvheadend, and that seemed to find things just fine, till the machine crashed - again and again… :-( )
[20:26] <intracube> erf
[20:26] <intracube> the documentation for all this is really poor...
[20:28] <markfoodyburton> At least for the card I'm using - it does seem that there are lots of parts of the jigsaw, but it's not clear if they all fit together :-)
[20:28] <intracube> markfoodyburton: same issue here
[20:29] <intracube> I can watch DVB-S channels through VLC
[20:29] <markfoodyburton> I got a snippet of video working, then - my machine died
[20:29] <intracube> but I can't figure out how to set up DVB-S2 for HD
[20:29] <markfoodyburton> so I'm sure something "works"
[20:29] <intracube> markfoodyburton: that sounds like a driver issue
[20:29] <markfoodyburton> have you tried tvheadend?
[20:29] <markfoodyburton> Yeah…
[20:29] <markfoodyburton> I'm sure it's a driver issue
[20:30] <intracube> haven't tried tvheadend yet
[20:30] <markfoodyburton> So far, that was the least painful part of the experience for me :-)
[20:30] <markfoodyburton> worth trying - it might just sort you out :-)
[20:31] <markfoodyburton> BTW - what card are you using?
[20:31] <intracube> TBS 6983
[20:31] <intracube> part of the problem is my sytem is a couple of years out of date
[20:31] <markfoodyburton> Ok - worth knowing - I'm using a technsat card - which I thought was supoprted - but ....
[20:32] <intracube> a lot of the versions of the tools seem buggy
[20:32] <intracube> TBS do their own drivers although they have to be compiled
[20:32] <intracube> but it wasn't too painful
[20:32] <markfoodyburton> I sympathise :-)
[20:32] <intracube> :)
[20:33] <markfoodyburton> Maybe I'll junk this card and get a TBS one...
[20:33] <intracube> if I have any luck I'll report back
[20:33] <markfoodyburton> Somebody - somewhere - hints that IOMMU may cause an issue - I'll switch off and reboot....
[20:33] <markfoodyburton> Me too :-)
[20:46] <markfoodyburton> FWIW
[20:47] <markfoodyburton> I've done two things (it's late here, and I'm fed up, so I broke the cardinal rule) - adding iommu=off to the kernel options and type=1 verbose=2 to the module options….
[20:47] <markfoodyburton> And I'm not watching TV….
[20:51] <markfoodyburton1> Spoke too soon
[20:51] <markfoodyburton1> But at least the verbose=2 gives me more info.

[22:49] <intracube> this is confusing
[22:49] <intracube> from dvbv5-scan man page: "The dvbv5-scan goal is to scan for a list of physical channels/transponders and identify there the MPEG-TS services available.
[22:50] <intracube> if that's its purpose, why does it seem to need an 'initial file' which is a list of transponders on the satellite?!
[22:50] <intracube> that's the very thing it says it's scanning for
[22:57] * intracube still hasn't found a single example of the DVBV5 format file that dvbv5-scan expects
[22:57] <intracube> (for satellite)
[22:57] <intracube> the only examples floating about are for DVBC (cable)
