WhoWhatWhen
markfoodyburtonI've posted an issue on gitlab about the problem I've been having : https://github.com/ljalves/linux_media/issues/109
I've tried to hack about a bit in the device driver to see if there is anything obvious, but it's not even clear to me if the error I'm seeing from the device is the cause or a symptom….
I see a FIFO full or Blocked message, followed shortly atfer by the machine freezing completely….

markfoodyburtonI could really do with some help on this 'machine hanging' issue with the saa716x_budget driver. I though it might be a mutex issue, as the thing attempts a hw reset while holding the mutex - and maybe it is a mutex issue, but I have not been able to find it. Meantime, if I add more debug, the driver seems to crash a lot earlier, and not in the same place. Any help would be most appreciated. [14:52]
devinheitmuellermarkfoodyburton: if it’s not in the mainline kernel, you probably won’t find much help here. Best to reach out to whoever maintains the driver and/or if they have some forums. [14:54]
markfoodyburtonI was under the impression that it was mainline? All the doc's point to this forum… [14:54]
devinheitmuellerAFAIK it’s an out-of-tree driver. If that’s changed recently then that’s certainly good news. [14:56]
markfoodyburtonMaybe I should be trying with a mainline driver, but then I'm not sure which one. [14:56]
devinheitmuellerLast I checked, there isn’t a mainline driver for the saa7160. There are all sorts of IP issues related to that chip. [14:57]
markfoodyburtonI dont know devinheitmueller, I read here that it should be in mainline by 4.2 : http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TechniSat_SkyStar_S2 [14:57]
devinheitmuellerThe flexcop is a totally different driver than saa716x_budget. Do you have your boards confused? [14:58]
markfoodyburtonI'm running a 4.2 kernel, but it doesn't recognise my device….
Very probably !
(which would explain a lot I guess)
[14:58]
devinheitmuellerWould be nice to see the saa7160 upstream, but I’ve been saying that for years. THere are a bunch of legal issues surrounding the open source driver, and at this point I don’t expect to *ever* see the driver upstream. [15:00]
markfoodyburtonRight - lspci gives me saa7160. so that page is irrelevant, and hence one piece of confusion.
So - I need to address the maintainer directly I guess - but before I disappear - how do you go about debugging kernel hangs? I'm not getting a panic or anything - just a hang.
Do you guy's use user space kvm or some such?
[15:01]
devinheitmuellerI generally don’t trust KVM for such cases as they aren’t well suited to handle the high data rate and timing.
Have you tried the sysrq key?
[15:04]
markfoodyburtonsysrq key? whats that? [15:05]
devinheitmuellerFor some hangs you can whack alt-sysrq and “T” to get a dump of all thread stacks to the console.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key
[15:05]
markfoodyburtonAhh yes -
magic sysrq key -
[15:05]
devinheitmuellerWorks best with a serial console, of course. [15:06]
markfoodyburtonno - I didn't try it - unfortunately I dont have a keyboard (or screen) on the computer concerned… making debg a nightmare…. [15:06]
devinheitmuellerIf you’re going to debug a kernel issue, be prepared ot get a real hardware setup. :-) [15:06]
markfoodyburtonYeah :-(
(I prefer living in the virtual world, I get to change the model then :-) )
OK - thanks for your help, I'll try and get hold o fthe author of the saa716x driver
[15:06]
devinheitmuellerGood luck! [15:08]
markfoodyburton:-) [15:08]

djglcrope_: I've just bought one of those Astrometa sticks after reading that you wrote a driver for the DVB-T/T2/C demod. Have you ever tried to ask Socionext for the datasheet? [19:08]
........ (idle for 36mn)
crope_djgl: it is panasonic who makes those demod chips [19:44]
merbanandjgl: I tried and didn't succeed
djgl: but alot of things are known about the chips but not implemented
djgl: a bug in the i2c i/o makes it hard to develop on the astrometa chip also
djgl: and my dvb setup is not up and running yet after a move
djgl: but if you want to develop it yourself there is information on the linuxtv wiki

djglcrope_: Fujitsu and Panasonic formed Socionext in March to split off their SoC (and DTV) business. Socionext still lists the MN88472 in their lineup.
merbanan: is this i2c problem the one discussed in February, where crope_ wanted to reduce the firmware chunk size?
[20:27]

merbanandjgl: GoTView MasterHD 3 USB tuner
check that thread it has some info about the i2c error
in some cases the i2c block in the rtl2832p stalls
the only way I can think of fixing this is to get the errata info from Realtek or to just emulate the behavior of the windows driver

intracubeanyone know if w_scan has an option to ignore encrypted channels?
dvbscan does, but it doesn't work with DVB-S2
