Dotz0cat_hey i am trying to get a webcam to still pictures on a laptop. i plan to evently use it to make timelapses. the pictures i get from ffmpeg are not that good. the first picture has a chunk that is darker that the other parts of the image. and the other images are a bit too bright
also if it helps the webcam i am using is a microsoft lifecam cinema. i have already added the quirk for it

koikeDotz0cat: did you tried with another tool other then ffmpeg? Also, are you using mainline kernel? [17:57]
Dotz0cati started with using fswebcam. i dont remember how the pictures it took turned out. i should be on the latest kernel that arch offers as of yesterday [18:01]
koikeDotz0cat: uname -r gives the kernel version. I also would suggest you to try capturing images with other tools, qcam from v4l-utils for example, you can find it here: https://linuxtv.org/repo/
Dotz0cat: this channel if for kernel camera drivers development. So the idea is first to try to isolate if you problem is in the kernel or in the ffmpeg tool. If it is in ffmpeg, then I suggest you to ask the ffmpeg community. If it is in the kernel, I would suggest you to try the latest kernel version in the media maintainer's tree to see if the issue persists. If yes, then it is a kernel issue

ndufresneSo apparently Broadcom bought Argon, and uses their team and design for the HEVC codec on RPi4
and interestingly, it's stateless
they made a userspace driver apparently, that's what being used by kodi, https://github.com/popcornmix/FFmpeg/blob/2711/libavcodec/rpi_hevc.c
