stevenm_anyone about? I've bought 3 devices so far hoping each would be completely compatible with v4l2 on a modern distro/kernel - with no such joy
the last one is even listed on the wiki as tested by the devs
rather than taking another wild stab (as educated as I can try to make it, by reading) it's be nice to have a conversation with someone in the know instead ;S

jm_hhi stevenm_ can you tell us which device we are talking about :-) ? [06:39]
stevenm_well I started with an Ion VCR2PC - which is an actual VCR with usb video output (based on a tm6010 chipset)
that worked horribly - lots of green lines, could never get it working properly... plus the tm6010 isn't supported well
also the VCR was crap - bad picture (even on a TV) and mono audio
so I swapped to a em2860 chipset device... an Ion Video2PC - which has the usual 3 RCA inputs plus S-Video... and then bought a (what would have been for late 90's) top of the range JVC VCR :P
but the audio doesn't work - when I look at dmesg, it just craps out
so my most recent purchase has been to go older with an em2800 based device... a terratec cinergy 200
which is on the validated boards list... https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Em28xx_devices#Validated_boards
and again - audio just craps out and doesn't come up properly
at this point I've been thinking maybe trying to find a UVC based capture USB dongle with S-Video input
but I would like a good audio and video combined device - preferably not just crappy AC97 also
jm_h, that give you a good enough picture ? :D

ezequielgstevenm_: that is somewhat unexpected, given the ion video 2 pc is listed there.
stevenm_: fwiw, i maintain the easycap stk1160-based variants, and afaik they should work pretty nicely for analog video/audio capture.
not sure how easy it is to get those, there are some non-supported easycap labeled variants out there.
[09:13]
stevenm_ezequielg, hey
yeah I think I noticed that on the wiki
as maybe being the only easycap to not so em28xx audio (which I'm guessing is ac97)
although the stk1160 seems to be too hmm
[09:19]
ezequielgit's an ac97 chipset, yes.
curious: why do you dislike ac97?
[09:20]
stevenm_i probably won't notice the difference, just something someone once said
not sure which way to step really... i though the em28xx devices would be easy peasy compared to the original tm6010 based device I tried
and whilst getting video out of them is fine - the audio just never seems to want to work on stock modern kernels (e.g. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04)
either it shows on alsa but no audio - or it doesn't make the alsa device at all
ezequielg, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EasyCAP-USB-Audio-Video-Grabber-Syntek-STK1160-Chipsatz-Hyperion-Raspberry-Pi/123394566555?hash=item1cbae3a99b:g:LoMAAOSwXYJfYKU~
this one claims to be stk1160 and has s-video
sod it - BUY
5th time's the charm
i'm going to have a lot of usb capture devices to sell (or donate if anyone is interested) after all this is over with :P
[09:21]
ezequielgnow that i think about it, i wonder how much tested s-video is :S seems it's a bit tested, since it's mentioned specifically in the code.
and also here https://easycap.blogspot.com/search?q=s-video
in any case, you know where to find me for questions or... at least rants ;)
[09:29]
stevenm_well given that news article is 8 years old
I'd hope I don't need any alternate kernel module for s-video support now
[09:30]
ezequielgyou should not. [09:33]
