jlc32 | Hello everyone, am I allowed to ask question in the channel ? | [16:56]
hansg | jlc32, sure, note on IRC it is typically better to just ask and then see if someone is around to answer.
(just ask the actual question that is) | [16:59]
jlc32 | Ok thanks, I have a device that is recognized as 'em28xx 1-1.2:1.0: Identified as Terratec Cinergy T2 Stick HD (card=96)' everything seems to be flowing smoothly at 'dmesg' until I try to w_scan2 I get 'si2168 9-0064: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-demod-si2168-a30-01.fw' si2168 9-0064: firmware version: A 3.0.19' then 'si2157 10-0060: unknown chip version Si2176-B30 ROM 0x13'' then '
Any ideas what might be causing this behavior ? | [17:03]
.... (idle for 15mn) | |||
hansg | No, sorry. mchehab is our dvb expert he might know, but I think it means you have a device which has never been tested with Linux before. | [17:19]
jlc32 | There is a link on the linuxtv.org indicating that the device should work with given correct module, driver and firmware ; https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TerraTec_Cinergy_T2_Stick_HD | [17:24]

KitsuWhooa | it's possible they made a revision to it
I don't see any B30 in there, so it's possible it needs different firmware altogether (I have no experience with these sticks specifically, so this is guesswork) | [18:03]
..... (idle for 20mn) | |||
*** | chewitt has quit IRC (Quit: Zzz..) | [18:26]
jlc32 | Yes there are no B30 involved there and I believe the underlying issue is the firmware for demodulator and tuner, kernel module responsible might also might need to be altered as well
Do you think it is worth it to spend time on these (since I got the device from someone) or purchase a new product ? | [18:31]

KitsuWhooa | I'd personally do both
I love finding excuses to fix things I suspect it's a matter of extracting the firmware from somewhere, and then telling the kernel to load it so if you can figure out how to do that, it might just work. Does it work if you, say, use a VM with the windows drivers, have it load the firmware, then undo usb passthrough so that the kernel gets a device with the firmware already loaded? (again, no idea how the code works, but I'd assume if it sees firmware already running, it might leave it as is) | [20:52]

jlc32 | Any suggestions on getting a new device first ? I like having multiple options on my desk while working on various things
Yes passthrough would work for me would you like to elaborate the process for me a little bit ? I have VirtualBox 7.0 ready | [21:15]

KitsuWhooa | 23:15:35 <jlc32> Yes passthrough would work for me would you like to elaborate the process for me a little bit ? <-- I assume it's a matter of blacklisting the kernel driver in modprobe so that it doesn't autoload, pass it through to a VM, install whatever drivers it wants, make sure it works, then disable usb passthrough and manually load the kernel module
and I have no idea about devices, sorry. I use ancient PCI cards :p | [23:42]
