Use MPlayer ( http://mplayerhq.hu).
MPlayer can handle the MPEG-PES of the DVB-cards.
It's a powerful video/audio-player for UNIX (some are trying to compile
it for Windoze, now) and it has a part called 'mencoder' which can
encode nearly every format to MPEG1/2, and DivX in AVI-format.
It can work completely command-line based for scripting or you can use
'-gui'-option to have a nice GUI-based-player.
See http://mplayerhq.hu/DOCS for Documentation.
