Done some more testing,

Following works :
VDRAIO with DVB siemens_dvb-0.9.4-2002-05-20.tgz
vdr-1.1.12 with DVB siemens_dvb-0.9.4-2002-06-23.tgz

vdr-1.1.12 _did_ work with the NEWSTRUCT version of driver

What ever happened when changing from NEWSTRUCT to HEAD totally
broke it :(
