Wouldn't you lose the card-specific Ethernet MAC address this way? AFAIK,
the Siemens cards have a "TechnoTrend-style" encrypted MAC address in the
EEPROM as well, don't they?

I think a utility to dump a backup copy of the EEPROM contents would make
sense...
