The error above indicates that you have comiled and installed the 
in-kernel 2.4 bttv module.

Make sure that you *don't* compile the 2.4 kernel bttv and that no stale 
"bttv.o" module is lying around in /lib/modules/...

"modprobe" has a fixed search order, so it will always find the "kernel" 
bttv module before the external compiled bttv module, which is simply 
the wrong bttv version.

Make sure that the bttv driver from the external package is the only 
bttv driver around.
