OK, so it works with the alps_bsrv2 driver, but not with the ves1x93. Pretty 
conclusive where the problem is then..

OK, I'll have a mess about with the ves1x93. I can pretty much guess exactly 
what it is thats going wrong.

One thing that worries me though; if you're using 1.1.1, there isn't an 
alps_bsrv2 driver any more; it was merged into the stv0299 one a while back.
