[linux-dvb] Re: Help. How to understand DVB tools?

I assume from your comments about the devices in /dev/dvb that your hardware is correctly detected and working. If this is not the case then you need to take a couple of steps back and tell us which dvb card(s) you have, kernel version, patches applied etc.

====== Step 1
Once your hardware is correctly detected. The first step is to perform a channel scan which will yield a list of channels available in your area. Channel scanning is performed by a dvb-utility called scan (this is in the dvb-apps module in CVS) . You will need to supply scan a config file which tells it where to fine one of the multiplexes available in your area. If you are lucky there will be an existing config file for your transmitter, look in dvb-apps/util/scan/dvb-t/uk-{name of your transmitter}.

====== Step 1 .1
If you dont have an existing channel config file (like i didnt + I will add to mailing list asap oops) you will need to create one manually. Refer to
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/reception_advice/index.asp.html
and choose the area you are in, then click on the line ' Digital Transmitter Information' and finally choose the transmitter you are using. This will take you to a page which details the frequency and offsets for the multiplexes ( a multiplex is a collection of digital TV channels) available to you.
e.g. For Knock Moor

The next step is to construct the config file from this information.
create a new file called uk-{transmitter name} in the dvb-t sub dir of scan.

In my case I created uk-Caradon

If your transmitter has an offset you will need to add/subtract 167kHz from the frequency
As for the the FEC (the 1/2 field) I had to guess until it worked, as I couldnt find a source of information on that. The same applies for QAM16 you may have to try QAM64. The rest of the parameters are fix as far as I know in the UK.

====== Step 2
Once you have a config for your transmitter. Its time to scan
./dvbscan dvb-t/uk-Cardon > channels.conf

Which will output something like

Now you have a channels.conf file its time to test.
This only works if you have a recent version of the dvb-apps (please correct me here people) .
Open a console and run
[root@broadmead szap]# ./tzap -c /home/peter/email.conf "BBC ONE"
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
reading channels from file '/home/peter/channels.conf'
tuning to 578000000 Hz
video pid 0x0258, audio pid 0x0259

This tunes the DVB card to a station, FE_HAS_LOCK means it has tuned successfully.

What I need is some docs that lay out how to get this working in clear
step by step instructions. (It's the only way I managed to set up
Gentoo) I don't mind reading the docs providing they are clear, but
those provided with the driver seem anything but clear. I have read all
over the site looking for simple easy to follow instructions on how to
set up this specific card - but what I found either didn't relate to me,
or it read like a Martian technical manual.

Please advise.
