The syslogd logs a mark timestamp regularly. The
default interval between two -- MARK -- lines is 20
minutes. This can be changed with this option.
Setting the interval to zero turns it off entirely.

This entry is interesting if you don't use a local /var/log/messages file
but send your syslog entries to a common syslog server. Because of the MARK
lines you can easily see if your machines are still alive.
