Ok, now that you know about the arms in your computer here is the 
probable reason for the crashes:
there seem to be still problems when trying to tune in a channel which 
can`t be tuned to (wrong parameters, not  transmitting at the moment, 
can`t be recieved at your location/with your dish, ...).
vdr does EPG scanning in the background. So if you have "wrong" channels 
in your channels.conf, that can result in arm crashes eventually.
