yes you can use -cache option or just stdin (pipe).

for instance :

cat 001.vdr 002.vdr 003.vdr | mplayer -vo xv|dxr3 -cache 1024 -

On my setup it even works without -cache option.

You can do timeshifting using this command as 002.vdr doesn't need to
exist when replay starts.
