go to http://www.directfb.org/ . 
 d/l and compile     DirectFB 0.9.8,     DFBSee 0.6.
Now you should be able to watch AVIs JPGs and use a V4L interface directly on 
the framebuffer of your graphicscard (no X). 
Never tried it though.
But there are nice screenshots and the player has a very nice UI (star trek 
like) ;)
