Just a thought:

Add a version number in the begginning of the channels.conf file. The 
version number would be increased after each new channels.conf format. 
This way new VDR releases could be backwards compatible with old 
channels.conf files. E.g. VDR would read the version number from the 
channels.conf file and parse the file according to the version number. 
This way changing the channels.conf format would not affect users who are 
happy with their current channels.conf files.
