Doesn't work the VDR switch "--terminal=???" for you?
Or: I start my vdr in the script "/etc/init.d/vdr" with:
/usr/local/bin/runvdr < /dev/tty12 > /dev/tty12 2> /dev/tty12 &
This should result in the same effect as the --terminal= switch.
For me this works great.
