I use vdr only with lirc and via vdradmin from a differnt machine:

|[stefanh@zaphod stefanh]$ grep vdr /etc/inittab 
|vdr:235:respawn:/usr/local/bin/runvdr -s /video0/shutdown.sh -v /video0

You have to chance runvdr a little to your environment.
