1. if you do timshift you will have to do r/w on the same disk
2. vdr with multiple video dir´s (video0, video1) look for space when its decide´s where to record, that you replay a recording from somewhere does have no influance
3. the i/o capabilitys of a >20GB (with DMA, 3.5", half high -> the "usual" IDE) is able to handle more then one stream read and one write "simultaniosly"
one stream has ~3-7MBit/s, means ~2MB/s ramdom r/w
