[vdr] vdr with monitor (without tv)

Hello,

I have a few general questions about vdr.
I don't have a dvb card yet so I can't install vdr and try it to find out 
myself what i need to know.

Is it possible to use vdr with a monitor (and graphic card) instead of using 
the DVB card TV OUT? 
(I want to do that essentially for testing purpose)

What I mean by using vdr is :
watching Live Channel/Channel/DVD/VCD/Divx
recording a Channel (well that doesn't need monitor or tv...).
Playback recorded files.

If it's possible, would I need an X server to do that?

Sorry if the answers are obvious, i don't really have time to investigate more 
until i get my dvb-s card.
