[vdr] Using keyboard commands

Hi, I have compiled vdr and if I lauch it from shell it rocks!
Alas, when starting at boot (lauched by rc.local) it doesn't hear my
keyboard.
I'm on the way to buy an IR remote but I'd like to use the keyboard just now
("oh quaint!" ;)))

I saw a -t option but the doc it's not very clear how to use it, at least
for me. 

I saw an example with
./vdr -t /dev/tty8

Is it right? and what difference does the number?
