I have exactly the same problem. Tried gcc-2.95 and 3.3, dxr3-0.1.9 and
0.1.8a.
Playing around with PrimaryDVB results in either

May 18 22:12:13 cargo vdr[278]: found 2 video devices

May 18 22:12:14 cargo vdr[278]: trying device number 3 instead
May 18 22:12:14 cargo vdr[278]: setting primary device to 3
May 18 22:12:14 cargo vdr[278]: SVDRP listening on port 2001
May 18 22:12:14 cargo vdr[278]: switching to channel 3
(vdr running but no picture)

or

May 18 22:00:57 cargo vdr[2362]: found 2 video devices
May 18 22:00:57 cargo vdr[2362]: initializing plugin: dxr3 (0.1.9):
DXR3-MPEG decoder plugin
(complete system halt)
