Single recordings should show up almost immediatly. I have noticed delays only
during the initial startup phase (FAM needs some time to collect information
for the entiere directory tree just like the original 'find' would) and when
moving arround a huge subdirectory tree.

Are you using SMB, NFS or FAT filesystems?

Also, i have just discovered that the standard fam source release apparently
_does not_ contain the Linux dnotify support. Please make sure that youre
installed version of fam has the dnotify patch applied, otherwise polling
will be used by FAM and that will most likely result in the effect you are
seeing.
The patch can be found at SGI's OSS FAM site
(http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/download/contrib/dnotify.patch).

I am using debian unstable and the fam package has this patch applied.
