Indeed that is very strange. Don't have any clue what missing module could 
cause this. I am running a 2.4.20.SuSE kernel on two systems (SuSE 8.2 on 
both PCs) and my VDR is running the modules compiled on the other PC. Runs 
perfectly stable with no unresolved symbols. I've configured the kernel 
that is running on both PCs by doing make cloneconfig in the kernel tree of 
a freshly-installed SuSE 8.2 and then removing every hardware I don't need 
in make menuconfig.

pollwait however should be a pretty common kernel function IMHO, so I guess 
there's really something wrong with your sources...
