DirectFB is a virtual framebuffer with support for 
hardware-acceleration. In case functions are not supported by hardware, 
they're emulated by DirectFB.

It also supports several layers, even transparent ones. That way you can 
run the video in a background layer and OSD in a transparent foreground 
layer.
