I used an old SAT-Receiver for that, but as mentioned before: Sound is
only mono, then.
If you use a cable for the IR-Transmitter you could use another cable (or
a free pair of wires in the infrared-cable) for digital audio as well. I
used a 16-wire telephone-cable for ir and sound signals. If I am correct
you "should" use a thin coax cable, but the telephone-cable (mine is
foil-shielded) works fine for digital audio and even transmits
DolbyDigital. If you just want to have stereo, there are quite cheap
D/A-converters at ELV or CONRAD...
Another possibility would be to use a stereo fm-radio modulator, which is
quite inexpensive. If you put it on your TV-cable using a splitter and
shield everything correctly you get quite good sound quality with a
standard fm-radio, which in my case is integrated into my DolbySourround
decoder. (But I don't know if this is legal. I think here in Germany it
is, if you shield everything correctly).
Cheers,
Markus
