I'd recommend you to take a look at dvbtextsubs by Dave Chapman,
<http://www.linuxstb.org/dvbtextsubs/index.shtml>
I know Dave is currently working on a new release which may
improve timing for some kinds of problematic recordings and
that maybe also gives other text rendering options.
