am curious if reusing the mpeg2 decoder in ogle was considered?
No, because "libsoftmpeg" should *only* use LGPL libraries, so that it's possible to use it in closed-source environments. Besides using libavcodec, FusionSound and DirectFB everything was written from scratch in order to prevent licensing issues.
