For what it is worth, I haven't had any problems with subtitles since
1.3.38 or something, which was the last time when the DVBsubs.patch of
the vdr-subtitles plugin needed to be adjusted. Last night, I upgraded
straight from 1.4.3 to 1.4.5, and there weren't any conflicts related
to the DVB subtitles.

To be honest, I do have one problem with DVB subtitles: when there are
multilingual subtitles (for instance, Finnish and Swedish) in a recording,
vdr seems to pick the language at random when playing back the recording.
Sometimes it even switches the language on the fly. This doesn't happen
in live playback. When I asked the author of the plugin (Pekka Virtanen)
about this a long time ago, he said that the fix would require some user
interface changes.

So is Debian GNU/Linux (unstable). I'm using self-built kernel, DirectFB,
ffmpeg, vdr and plugins. I believe that the Debian packaged ones would be
good by now, unless you need some special patches to vdr. Even then,
you could probably apply the patches to the Debian source package and
build your own binary package.
