For the hard disk of a VDR system this simple rule applies: The bigger the better. One hour of a recording needs roughly 2GB of hard disk space. The speed of modern 5400RPM hard disk is sufficient for VDR. The advantage of the slower 5400RPM disks over the 7200RPM disk, is the lower noise and dissipated heat.

The definitive recommendation of for all VDR users is at the momemt the

This hard disk has a liquid bearing and runs with 5400RPM and has a capacity of 160GB. it is nearly noiseless.

If the hard disk is still too noisy, it is possible to activate the AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management). This is deactivated by default due to the lower access times. The average loss of 1-2.5MB per second can be ignored for VDR. For activation the HUTIL utility is necessary.
