xawtv was originally just a TV viewing application for Bttv devices (bt848, bt878), but has evolved into a small suite of X11 applications for V4L devices (the 3.9x branch). The version 4.x development snapshots of xawtv added support for DVB functionality.
Note: Development of xawtw, both the version 3 and 4 branches, came to a halt several years ago. Having not kept in step with broader kernel developments, version 3 become broken and most distros choosing to include it within their releases were stuck with having to independently provided their own patch solutions. Recently, an effort has been made by LinuxTV developers to provide a centralized repository for version 3 (see here and here for details). This repository can be found in the http://git.linuxtv.org/xawtv3.git tree.
