Arrgghhh, silly me - I should have remembered that...

I changed my test program so that it receives the entire TS now,
and have somewhat simplified it. The modified version is available at

  ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/pub/people/kls/vdr/x2.c

Now the point where it stops receiving data comes even earlier.
The counter in the first column of the output goes up to a maximum
of about 8000 (but it may also go up only to as little as 200).

It still looks like there is something wrong with the poll() mechanism...
