[linux-dvb] Developments with DVB-T in the UK

Hi,

I haven't seen this on the list yet:

There's good news for "open" DVB in the UK. After ITV Digital's
commercial failure there's been some talk about the "death" of digital
terrestrial here.

But ITC has provisionally awarded the three spare mux allocations to a
BBC/Crown Castle consortium who will use them for FTA channels.

This does seem to be real unencrypted FTA (cf FTV channels on Sky Digital
where you still need the proprietary decoder).

Whilst the channels they propose to add probably won't set the world on
fire, it is very good sign to see an open platform getting support. And
especially good news for UK linux-dvb users.

On the technical side there seems to be lots of support to move from 64QAM
to 16QAM modulation to improve signal reach and stability. Looks like its
going that way.

I was interested to read ITC comments that:

    * All technical aspects of the transmission roll-out and receiver
specification are to be handled through The Digital Network (TDN) -
or its successor - to ensure all-industry participation. There will
be a non discriminatory requirement for kite marking boxes and it
will be clear that technical specifications should not be used to
      achieve gateway control.

and

    * We will require the listings information which informs the
Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to conform to open technical
standards. This would enable TV manufacturers to design their own
      presentation of programme listings.

Hopeful "open" talk. Do I take it that stuff like MHEG and all that are
openly documented?

The press release is at:

Regards,
Steve
