That's why I use:

% Make \_ an underscore.
\newcommand{\XXXfoobarXXX}{\underline\space}
\let\_=\XXXfoobarXXX

Maybe automatic generators doesn't need this, but sure it is useful
for hand-written documents...

Maybe slightly OT, but posting since this might be useful...
