I'm not sure whether this is really related to encoding errors. 
Maybe the new firmware places some restrictions on the data stream.
Could a firmware developer please comment on this?

Replace the firmware files (Root, Dpram) in the 'driver/av7110' 
directory with the files from the old driver. (See below.)
Delete av7110_firm.h and re-compile the driver.

The new driver uses features which the old firmware doesn't provide.
You might encounter unpredictable results.

For example, take the CVS snapshot from
http://www.linuxdvb.tv/download/dvb-20020520.tar.bz2
You'll find the firmware files (Root, Dpram) in the 'driver' 
subdirectory.
